Nina Simone’s life story was brought to Netflix in the widely acclaimed documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? last year, and in 2016, her legacy is coming to the big screen in the upcoming biopic, Nina. With Zoe Saldana playing the iconic jazz artist and civil rights activist, the movie revolves around Nina’s later years living in exile in France and her relationship with her former nurse-turned-manager Clifton Henderson.
However, the project hasn’t been as well received as Netflix’s What Happened, Miss Simone? in these early stages; the casting of Saldana has been hotly contested due to her light complexion (Mary J. Blige was previously cast in the lead role before dropping out), while Simone’s daughter took exception to the script, which seems to give Henderson much of the credit for her mother’s later career.
Directed by Liz Garbus and also starring David Oyelowo, Mike Epps and Ella Thomas, Ninahits theaters on April 22. Check out the first trailer below.
