This is the most excited I’ve been about a new song in a really really long time. More excited than I was before Kanye’s Yeezy Season 3 and The Life Of Pablo unveiling. More excited than I was for What a Time To Be Alive to finish downloading. More excited than I was waiting for Kendrick’s Grammy set to start (although, in the end, that set blew me away). I just feel like I’ve been waiting (and more importantly, waiting in the dark) for proof of life from Jai Paul for so long.
Finally, there is new music!

This West Londoner enigma of British alt-dark-pop makes two of the most haunting mesmerizing songs I’ve ever heard in life, “BTSTU” and “Jasmine.” Then he signed to XL Records, and pretty much disappeared. There was an unauthorized demo leak, and some new songs from his brother, also very good. I would hound anyone with a UK citizenship for gossip, and all I got were rumors of people bangin’ on the garage door of Jai Paul’s home, trying to separate the man from his work. No idea if any of that was ever true.
But it almost became a point of recognition of kindred spirits, whenever I would wonder if the Gods would ever bless us with another Jai Paul song, a few of our twitter family would chime in and understand my anguish. Love you guys.
Anyways, I’m getting off on a tangeant. This week was rough for lovers of music and comedy and talent. Rest in Peace Phife Dawg and Garry Shandling. But I’m so happy that I got to jump through multiple hoops and give up my cell number and register on a weird site just to hear a 3:40 minute song by The Paul Institute. It’s worth it, even if it’s not as immediately life-changing as “BTSTU” or “Jasmine.” Yet.
My user name was “Insider User.” How perfect.
