If you’ve snuck onto Facebook today, you probably noticed something different about your news feed: the addition of emoji buttons. The social network has rolled out five new reactions — love, haha, wow, sad and angry, in addition to the existing like button — allowing you to engage with your friends’ posts in a more nuanced way. The emojis appear by hovering over the “like” button on desktop, or by holding down the “like” button on mobile and tablet (you’ll need to update the app on your iPhone or Android device, though).
Facebook have reportedly been testing this new feature since last year and chose the five reactions based on “how people are already commenting on posts and the top stickers and emoticons as signals for the types of reactions people are already using.” Over time, the type of posts that appear on your news feed will be affected by how often you react to content. For instance, if you get tend to get angry about a lot of things, then expect to see more infuriating posts on your news feed.
