Will Smith Confirms He Will Skip the Oscar Awards (and Probably Be Blacklisted in Hollywood)

Actor Will Smith is one of the few black stars on the official (read: white) Hollywood A-list. But his membership into that exclusive club may be in jeopardy.
In an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America, Smith confirmed he will not attend the Oscar Awards on Feb. 28.
Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith is calling for a boycott of the awards telecast after the Academy failed to nominate Smith for his role in the flop movie Concussion.
“No, my wife’s not going. It would be awkward for me to show up withCharlize (Theron),” Smith told Good Morning America Thursday. “We’ve discussed it. We’re part of this community, but at this current time, we’re uncomfortable to stand there and say that this is OK.”
Smith, 47, claimed he did not know his wife was planning a boycott.
“I was out of the country at the time. And I came home, ‘What happened?’ ” he laughed. “She’s deeply passionate, and when she is moved, she has to go.”
Smith described his reaction to an emotional video Jada posted on Facebook.com.
“I heard her words and I was knocked over. I was happy to be married to that woman,” he continued. “There’s a position that we hold in this community, and if we’re not a part of the solution, we’re part of the problem. And it was her call to action for herself and for me and for our family to be a part of the solution.”
Smith didn’t address the statements made by cross-dresser Alexis Arquettethat he is gay and Jada is his lesbian beard.
Director Spike Lee walked back his call for a boycott of the Oscars, but he stands behind Jada and other actors who will not attend the event.
