Jay Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, refused to make appearances to promote the Gold Jay Z toilet water after pocketing $2 million, says the licensing company that filed the lawsuit.
“Sales of Gold Jay Z have declined considerably because of Jay Z’s and his teams lack of interest in supporting and promoting his own brand,” according to the lawsuit filed by Perfumania Holdings Inc.
Despite the lack of promotion, Gold Jay Z outsold other fragrances in its class, including David Beckham‘s aftershave brand in 2014.
Perfumania Holdings Inc. complained bitterly that sales declined from a projected $35 million to just $6.1 million because Jay Z was too busy promoting other projects.
According to court documents obtained by The NY Post’s Page Six, “Jay Z refused to appear on a popular morning talk show, and turned down a cover story for Women’s Wear Daily, among other scheduled events.
The 47-year-old father of 2 even rejected 5 mockups for 18-carat gold bottle caps designed by Jacob the Jeweler for a consumer contest.
The lawsuit claims Jay Z ruined “the emerging brand… all the while collecting a handsome guaranteed minimum royalty as well as Perfumania common stock.”
