Troy Ave Thinks Kendrick Lamar & Kanye West are “Weirdo Rappers”
The face of rap has undoubtedly changed since New York City dictated hip-hop in the ’80s and ’90s. But for an MC who represents the ex-drug-dealing street rappers of old, there’s a lot of “weirdo rappers” out right now in Troy Ave’s eyes, including Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West. The Brookyln upstart spoke his mind during a recent appearance on Hot 97′s Morning Show.
“At what point did it become cool to celebrate the drug user instead of the dealer?” he asked, while pointing to previous eras when each region championed a traditional street rapper (ie Biggie from New York and T.I. from Atlanta). Troy reassures he’t not dissing Kendrick, Kanye and co., because he enjoys their records; he’s just pointing out that the ‘hood don’t love it (word to Jay Rock).
“I’m like Jay Z at the time, and these guys are like Digable Planets,” he said of other new artists out of Brooklyn. “That’s cool; I like some of Digable Planets’ music, everybody has their lane. But in this lane, when it comes to being the biggest rap-rapper in the game, representing what rap is about, Troy Ave got it hands down in New York City.”
His argument is pretty flawed given that Kendrick nor Kanye are associated with drugs, but there’s certainly some truth in his sentiments about the rap game as a whole. Let us know your thoughts below.
