jhene aiko
Fresh off collaborations with Drake (“From Time“) and Childish Gambino (“Bed Peace“), Jhené Aiko is one of R&B’s hottest (in more than one way) names right now. Backstage before a recent stop in D.C. on Would You Like a Tour?, the Los Angeles songbird sat down with Elliott Wilson to give a little backstory to the aforementioned records.
Ms. Aiko explained that she initially wrote very personal rhymes to Drizzy’s “From Time,” before scrapping them and freestyling her hook and verse while “super high” (that California kush, ladies and gentleman). As for her collab with Donald Glover, Jhené revealed that the “Bed Peace” theme actually came after they recorded the track so, naturally, he had to play the John Lennon to her Yoko Ono.

Looking ahead to her upcoming Sail Out EP, Jhené described it as “easygoing,” “mellow” and “more hip-hop,” with each of the seven songs having a different vibe. The project, which features appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Childish Gambino and Vince Staples, arrives next Tuesday (November 12).
